How Much Mulch Do I Need? Yards, Bags and Depth That Works

Mulch is sold by the cubic yard (bulk) or in bags (usually 2 or 3 cubic feet). The amount you need depends on one thing: the square footage you're covering and how deep you want the layer.

The calculation

Multiply your bed's length by width to get square feet. Multiply by the depth in feet ? 3 inches is 0.25 feet. Divide the result by 27 to get cubic yards. For bags, divide your total cubic feet by the bag size.

What depth do you actually need?

• 2 inches: thin top-dressing, mostly decorative.
• 3 inches: the sweet spot for most beds ? weed suppression + moisture retention.
• 4+ inches: only for fresh planting areas or heavy weed pressure.

The common mistake

People measure one dimension, guess the other, and under-order. A "10 ? 8 ft" bed is 80 square feet ? at 3 inches deep that's about 0.74 cubic yards, roughly 10 bags of 2 cu ft mulch. Measure both sides before you go.
