Worked example
For a 200 ft fence with posts every 8 ft, you need about 200 / 8 = 25 gaps, which means 26 posts (one for each gap plus the starting post). If each panel is 8 ft wide, that is 25 panels. Every gate takes the place of roughly a panel's worth of fencing while adding two gate posts of its own.
Posts are the part you must not undercount
Corners, gate openings and end runs each need their own post even when the math says otherwise. A simple 200 ft straight run uses fewer posts than the same 200 ft wrapped around a corner yard - so measure the real layout, not just the total length.
What the result means
The tool returns the number of posts and the number of panels or rails for a straight run. For a real yard, add corner posts for every turn and two extra posts at each gate before you order.

What spacing should I use?
6-8 ft is standard for most residential wood and vinyl fencing. Closer spacing is sturdier but costs more; 8 ft suits flat ground and lighter materials.
Before ordering, check local setback rules and your property line - a fence built six inches onto a neighbor's land can end up costing far more than the materials to move. Confirming the boundary first is the cheapest step in the whole project.
