How to use this calculator
Enter your annual salary, hours per week and weeks per year, then press Calculate. Hourly rate, monthly and weekly figures are shown.
Worked example
A $60,000 salary at 40 hours a week over 52 weeks is 2,080 hours a year, so the hourly rate is $60,000 / 2,080 = about $28.85. If the same salary is earned in 50 weeks with two weeks unpaid, divide by 2,000 hours instead - $30 an hour.
What the result means
The number converts a salary into a comparable hourly wage. It is the tool for the classic job comparison: an $85,000 salaried role versus a $40-an-hour contract role. Include weeks of unpaid time off to make the two apples-to-apples.
Salary vs hourly - the real differences
- Salaried roles usually include benefits; hourly contract roles often do not.
- Hourly work pays overtime at 1.5x (in most US states) past 40 hours.
- Salaried exempt roles pay a fixed amount regardless of hours worked.
Frequently asked questions
Should I count paid vacation?
Only if it differs between the offers. The clean comparison uses the weeks you actually expect to work in each job.
Remember that hourly rates rarely come with paid time off, health insurance or a 401(k) match, which a salary often bundles. When an hourly offer is 10% higher than a salaried one, it can still be the weaker deal once you price the missing benefits at 20-30% of salary.
