What the result means
Pallet count is what you'll order — sod is delivered in pallets covering roughly 450 sq ft. Ordering right avoids a mid-project shortage and mismatched batches.
What you are actually buying
Sod is sold by the square foot (or by pallet, which usually covers about 450 sq ft). The calculator finds your lawn's area from length and width, then adds a waste allowance for the curves, beds and odd edges that every real lawn has.
Worked example
A 40 ft by 30 ft lawn is 1,200 square feet. With a 10% waste allowance you need about 1,320 sq ft - roughly three pallets. Under-ordering means a visible seam where new and older sod meet.
Why the waste allowance matters
Rectangles are rare. Every tree ring, sprinkler head and angled fence edge costs sod, and cut pieces cannot be reused easily. Ten percent is the safe floor; irregular yards should use 15%.
