What the result means

Per person is the total split fairly across the table. The standard US tip is 15-20% depending on service.

How tipping is calculated

The tool multiplies your bill by the tip percentage to get the tip, adds it to the bill for the total, and divides the total by the number of people for the per-person share. It also handles the reverse case - if you know what you want to pay in total, it tells you what percentage that represents.

Worked example

A $64 bill at 18% is an $11.52 tip and a $75.52 total. Split two ways, that is $37.76 each - but rounding to $38 a head is fine and leaves a little extra.

Choosing the percentage

18-20% is the US standard for table service, 15% is on the low side, and 20%+ rewards exceptional service. For takeout or counter service, 10% or nothing is common. Tip on the pre-tax amount if you want to be precise, though most people tip on the total.
